Notes
This
selection of newspaper headlines, subtitles and teasers has been
produced by the evaluation of search engine results for the term
"Gaza". All the newspapers offer such search engines. The quality
varies a great deal. The German newspapers and the New York Times offer
good selection possibilities. For these one can choose a certain time
span and sort the results according to date. The URLs are given, but
they do not always lead to the desired articles. By far the most
articles in the Süddeutsche Zeitung are on a pay for use
basis. The
address called up is transient and must be searched for again through
the use of the title. The Süddeutsche Zeitung normally does
not give
the writer's name. It can be found in the text, however.
In the case of the Guardian, articles from further back can be called
up only for the whole year.
The
Haaretz caused me great difficulties. In principle, it offers a choice
of date. However, I did not succeed in any way to get this to
function. The most recent results are always shown.
The number of call
ups is limited to 20 pages, that is, to 200 listings; one cannot go
back very far with a subject like "Gaza". There are of course other
search engines, among which Google also offers a selection possibility
according to date. Concerning the Haaretz there was a
surprise. The
articles from Haaretz are always complemented by a large number of
references to recent events, which are apparently not separated from
the main articles or cannot be separated. Therefore, for example, one
can call up any number of articles for the year 2005 in which "Gaza
flotilla" appears.
The Haaretz listing is therefore incomplete.
It is a mixture of the search for writers' names and contributions
where "Gaza" appears in the URL.
There is no choice of date as far as the
Jerusalem Post is concerned. There is, however, the possibility to
rummage through to the back years when one is willing to call up
hundreds of search pages. For the subject "Gaza" one can go back to the
fall of 2005.
It looks at first like the very same story with
Ynet.news. The number of entries is shown. However, at the 67th entry
it
comes to an end. That is less than 10% of all entries. Ynet causes no
problem to Google: therefore I could evaluate YNet in this way.
Normally no authors' names are given.
The tables
There are two types of tables:
- per year an overview of titles with listing of only
one author
- per year two half-year overviews with title, complete
authors' names and, as far as available, subtitles and teasers/ excerpts
In
both cases the sources of the titles are differentiated by colors
according to "German", "English", and "Israeli." As far as was
possible
for me to tell (from perhaps not visible accompanying texts
like
URLs
and category information) there is also a difference according to
"news" and "opinion/commentary". This categorization is not very
accurate. The opinion articles are indicated by italics. Also, the
allusion to Gaza is occasionally not really present. I have removed a
series of such lines.
I have also removed letters to the editor.
In
the halfyear subtables, when there is a new paragraph and the title,
the subtitle and the teaser/excerpt exist, the lettering changes to
normal/italics/normal or italics/ normal/italics, respectively.
The title pages contain on the average about 5000 listings; the six
month overviews correspondingly about half of that amount.
In
this project the purpose was to establish whether it is possible to
collect large amounts of data and arrange them in a suitable
presentation. What was accomplished so far does not yet meet the
technical
state of the art, but some essential steps were taken. The
results could
be obtained due to the a favorable interaction of browsers,
macrorecorders, macroprograms and html-editors. I had already had some
experience with those.
